Dear Esther is a game I never realized how much I wanted to play until it was over. Perhaps I was coincidentally in the right mood to experience it at the time I did, but I think my mood probably wouldn't have mattered by the time I hit the caves regardless. Dear Esther is a first-person exploration and walking simulator video game developed by The Chinese Room for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.First released in 2008 as a free-to-play modification for the Source game engine, the game was entirely redeveloped for a commercial release in 2012. In Dear Esther you explore an uninhabited Hebridean island while an old man reads a series of letters to his eponymous deceased wife. Themes of love, loss, guilt and redemption intertwine with the bleak geography and orchestral music. As you explore the derelict remains of buildings, shipwrecks and caves, you find a story that must be interpreted to make sense.

Dear Esther features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack from Jessica Curry.Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it’s because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial – What happened on the motorway – is the island real or imagined – who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all…
